I understand that you are not getting sound when you turn on your computer.If the drivers for any hardware device which is attached or installed in the computer is not updated then there might be a chance that the device would not work.

I would like to know;

1. What is the make and model for your computer/laptop?

2. Did you make any (hardware or software) on your computer prior to the issue?

3. Please check if the onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS?

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Method 1: Run the Audio troubleshooters.

The Hardware Troubleshooter is an automated tool which will check the hardware connected to the computer for any known issues with it and provides the details and on how to fix them. Follow these steps and run the troubleshooter.

Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

1. Press Windows Key + W from the keyboard.

2. Type Troubleshooting in the search bar and press Enter.

3. Now click on Hardware and Sound.

4. Run the Play audio troubleshooter and follow the prompts. Once this is done, restart the computer and check the status.

If the issue persists follow method 2

Method 2: Download and update the driver yourself.

Use this method to install a driver that you download from the manufacturer's website. Do this if Windows Update can't find a driver for your device and the device didn't come with software that installsCheck for Windows Updates

Follow the steps below to check for windows updates

1. At the Start screen, type Windows Update.

2. Click or tap Settings on the right side of the screen, and then select Install optional updates from the left results.

3. When the Windows Update control panel opens, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner to receive a fresh list of updates.

You can also check for New Windows updates and optional updates.

Click http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/install-latest-update-windows-8-1and follow the instructions to install the Windows Updates.

Method 3: Set as default

By default Windows does not route sound over the HDMI output. To change this we need to change the settings in control panel.

Note: This will turn off sound from the speakers or normal audio output on the laptop. To get that back you will have to reverse this process.

Follow the steps below to set HDMI to default.

a) Press Windows key + X
b) Click on Control Panel
c) With the Control Panel in 'Control Panel Home' view please click on 'Hardware and Sound'
d) Where it says 'Sound' in green letters there are three options below that are in blue click on Manage Audio Devices
e) This will bring up a window labeled 'Sound'
f) On the Playback tab there is listed the sound options available to you. One should read Digital Output Device (HDMI) Click on that.
g) There should now be a check mark on that option, make HDMI sound output as default.
h) The Sound should then play through your HDMI hookups to the TV.

Method 4: Update the Sound driver.

a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.
b) Select Device Manager.
c) Double-click Sound driver from the left panel to Update.
d) Right-click the device, and click Update driver Software
e) Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal.

f) Click OK to remove the driver.

You may also download and install the latest driver for it from manufacturer’s website of your computer or the manufacturer’s website.
